GEO is not SEO with a new label

The core difference

A classic search result is a link. An answer engine produces a sentence. That sentence is assembled from passages it can isolate, verify and attribute. A page can rank well in Google and still be useless to an answer engine if its main point is buried in paragraph nine.

What extraction actually needs

• **A direct answer near the top.** Forty to ninety words that resolve the question without requiring context from earlier sections.

• **Self-contained sections.** Each H2 should make sense if it is lifted out of the page.

• **A resolvable entity.** Organization or LocalBusiness markup with consistent name, URL, logo and sameAs links.

• **Evidence.** Statistics linked to primary sources. Claims dated. Authors with real credentials.

• **Machine-readable freshness.** dateModified in the markup and in the visible page.

None of this is exotic. It is the same discipline good editors have always applied, made explicit for machines.

What you cannot measure

You cannot reliably measure "how often ChatGPT cites me" from outside the provider. Answers are personalized, non-deterministic and change between model versions. Anyone selling a precise, daily citation index without provider access should be asked exactly how the number was produced.

There are three honest states:

• **Directly observed** — you queried an authorized API, stored the answer, the model, the date and the region.

• **Provider data** — a third party supplies the observation, with its own method and limits.

• **Not measured** — you have no access, so you say so.

Kestralia separates content readiness (deterministic, always available) from observation (requires a key, always provenance-stamped). That separation is the product's integrity.

A practical sequence

• Fix entity markup and answer-first structure.

• Add question-shaped sections with real answers.

• Date the content and link the sources.

• Only then, if you have API access, start observing a small query set weekly.

• Compare readiness changes to observation changes — and accept that correlation is not proof.

The uncomfortable part

GEO will not save a site with no unique knowledge. If the page only restates what ten competitors already said, an answer engine has no reason to cite it and a reader has no reason to remember it. The durable work is still: know something specific, show the evidence, and write it clearly.
